BYOD (Build Your Own Distortion) is Chowdhury DSP's open-source guitar plugin: a node graph of distortion circuits, filters and utilities that you wire into your own effect.

BYODD adds the second D, dynamics. Any knob on any module can now follow a signal, so the effect reacts to how you play instead of sitting at one setting.

The simplest version: Input → Dynamics Tracker → Distortion → Output, with the tracker's envelope patched into the distortion's Drive knob. Pick harder, get more drive.

What it adds

  • Knob Mod ports. Every module with a continuous parameter gets one extra input. Patch a signal into it and all of that module's knobs follow it on top of their own positions, greyed out while they're driven. Each knob has its own depth, from −100% to +100%, so knobs can move independently and in opposite directions.
  • Dynamics Tracker. An envelope follower with the dry audio passed straight through, so it drops in anywhere in the chain. Sense, Attack and Release shape it, and a bipolar Amount knob scales or inverts it.
  • Mod Shaper. Sits between a modulation source and a Knob Mod port: Scale (negative inverts), Offset, Min/Max clamping and Smooth. Chain several for more complex curves.

BYOD's existing Level Detective, Param Modulator and MIDI Modulator also work as sources.

The plugin, its processors and the node graph are Chowdhury DSP's work and its contributors', under the GPL-3.0. BYODD is the modulation layer on top.
